Active Support and Disability Fitness Across Australia

Active Support and Disability Fitness Australia-Wide

Good disability support should reflect the individual’s goals, interests and preferred way of living.

For many people, that means support that helps them become more active, participate in the community, enjoy recreation and develop greater confidence in everyday activities.

Fit Your Ability provides active support and disability fitness across Australia, with local Personal Trainers and Disability Support Workers available in a growing number of locations.

Instead of relying on a one-size-fits-all program, we look at the individual. What do they enjoy? What would they like to improve? Where do they feel comfortable? What kind of assistance helps them participate?

These questions form the foundation of meaningful active support.

What Is Active Support?

Active support is an approach that helps people with disability take part in everyday activities as much as possible.

Rather than completing every task for the person, a support worker provides the appropriate level of assistance, encouragement or guidance so the person can be involved.

This might mean helping someone:

  • Choose and prepare a meal
  • Plan and attend an outing
  • Go shopping
  • Participate in a sport
  • Attend a social or community activity
  • Follow a personalised exercise routine
  • Try a new recreational activity
  • Build a regular walking or movement routine
  • Develop confidence in unfamiliar environments

Participation does not have to mean completing an activity independently. It may mean making a choice, completing one part of a task or becoming more involved over time.

The activity will look different for each person. It could include:

  • Going for a walk along the Gold Coast
  • Visiting a park, pool or recreation facility
  • Practising shopping and other everyday skills
  • Attending a community or sporting activity
  • Preparing a simple meal
  • Working on coordination, balance or mobility
  • Building confidence in new environments
  • Exercising at home, outdoors or in a private training space

How Are Active Support and Disability Fitness Connected?

Physical activity does not need to happen inside a gym.

Walking to the shops, practising ball skills, swimming, gardening and exploring a local park can all involve movement. When these activities are linked to a person’s interests, they may feel more relevant and enjoyable than a conventional workout.

Fit Your Ability combines knowledge of inclusive fitness with practical disability support. Depending on the person’s goals, a session may include structured exercise, active recreation, community participation or a combination of activities.

This can help make movement part of a person’s everyday routine rather than something separate from the rest of their life.

What Is Disability Fitness?

Disability fitness is exercise or physical activity adapted to the individual’s abilities, needs and goals.

It does not refer to one specific program or type of exercise. A suitable session could include:

  • Strength exercises
  • Walking
  • Balance activities
  • Boxing-based fitness
  • Seated movement
  • Mobility exercises
  • Coordination games
  • Swimming or water-based activity
  • Sport-specific practice
  • Recreational movement

The activity chosen should depend on the person—not simply their diagnosis.

Two people with the same diagnosis may have completely different interests, communication preferences, physical abilities and support needs. Personalisation is therefore essential.

Supporting More Than Physical Fitness

Exercise can be an important part of an active support session, but the purpose of support may be broader than improving physical fitness.

A participant might be working towards goals involving:

Community participation

Becoming more comfortable attending local activities, sporting clubs, classes or social outings.

Confidence

Trying new activities with support from someone who understands their needs.

Everyday skills

Participating in shopping, cooking, travel training, planning or other daily activities.

Recreation

Discovering hobbies and movement-based activities that the person genuinely enjoys.

Routine

Building more structure and consistency into the week.

Choice and control

Being involved in decisions about where to go, what to do and how support is delivered.

The right combination will depend on the individual’s priorities.

Where Can Support Take Place?

Fit Your Ability is designed to make support and fitness more accessible to people who may not feel comfortable in a conventional gym.

Depending on the location and local team availability, sessions may take place:

  • At the participant’s home
  • In a local park
  • On a walking path
  • At a recreation or sporting facility
  • In the community
  • At an available private studio or training location

This flexible approach allows activities to be selected around the person’s needs and real-life goals.

For example, someone who wants to become more confident shopping may benefit more from practising at their local shopping centre than completing an unrelated activity in a gym.

Someone who wants to improve fitness for a particular sport may benefit from combining exercise with practice in a relevant community environment.

Who Does Fit Your Ability Support?

Fit Your Ability supports children, teenagers and adults with different disabilities, abilities and fitness levels.

People may contact us when they are looking for:

  • A Disability Support Worker who encourages active participation
  • A Personal Trainer experienced in inclusive exercise
  • Support to become more active in the community
  • Exercise outside a busy commercial gym
  • Help trying a sport or recreational activity
  • One-on-one support adapted to communication or sensory preferences
  • A combination of disability support and physical activity

Every enquiry is considered individually. Service availability, the type of support offered and the experience of the local team may vary by location.

Is Fit Your Ability Available Australia-wide?

Fit Your Ability has Personal Trainers and Disability Support Workers in multiple locations around Australia, with the network continuing to grow.

Local availability should always be confirmed before making service arrangements. In some areas, mobile support may be available at home or in the community. Other locations may also have access to private training facilities.

When someone contacts Fit Your Ability, we can check whether there is a suitable team member servicing their suburb.

Can These Services Be Purchased Using NDIS Funding?

Fit Your Ability is a registered NDIS provider for relevant Core and Capacity Building supports.

A participant may be able to purchase an appropriate service using funding in their plan when it meets the applicable NDIS requirements and relates to their disability support needs and goals.

However, services are not automatically funded simply because:

  • The person is an NDIS participant
  • The provider is registered
  • The activity involves exercise
  • A similar service was funded for another participant

The use of funding depends on the individual plan, available budget, support category, goals, disability-related needs and plan-management arrangements.

Participants should check their plan and seek advice from the NDIA or their plan manager when uncertain about whether a particular support can be purchased with their funding.

Participants with NDIA-managed funding must use registered providers for supports purchased from that funding. Plan-managed and self-managed participants may have different provider choices, subject to the NDIS rules and the supports available in their plans.

Fit Your Ability does not claim that services are “NDIS approved,” endorsed by the NDIA or guaranteed to be funded.

Choosing an Active Support or Disability Fitness Provider

Before choosing a provider, it can help to ask:

  • Does the provider listen to the participant’s goals and preferences?
  • Can activities be adapted to the person’s ability?
  • Does the worker have relevant qualifications, checks or experience?
  • Can support take place in an environment where the person feels comfortable?
  • Does the provider clearly explain services, pricing and cancellation terms?
  • Is the participant involved in deciding what happens during sessions?
  • Does the provider avoid promising guaranteed outcomes?

Providers should make accurate, supportable claims and must not create a misleading impression that a product or service is automatically an eligible NDIS support.

Why Choose Fit Your Ability?

Fit Your Ability combines disability support with a genuine focus on movement, recreation and active lifestyles.

Our approach is based on:

  • Individual goals: Sessions start with what matters to the person.
  • Adapted activities: Exercises and activities are changed to suit the individual.
  • Flexible environments: Support may be delivered at home, outdoors or in the community.
  • Enjoyment: Activities are selected with the participant’s preferences in mind.
  • Participation: People are encouraged to be actively involved at their own level.
  • Respect: Support is delivered without judgment or comparison.

Fit Your Ability is a division of Fitness Enhancement, an Australian personal training business established in 1999. The team includes Personal Trainers and Disability Support Workers who share the aim of making active lifestyles more accessible to people of all abilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an active support worker?

An active support worker assists a person to participate in everyday, community or recreational activities. The level and type of assistance should be based on the individual’s abilities, preferences and support needs.

Is active support the same as personal training?

No. Personal training generally focuses on structured exercise. Active support may include exercise, but can also involve everyday activities, skill development, recreation and community participation.

Can a session include both support work and fitness?

It may be possible for a session to include active support and fitness-related activities when this is appropriate for the person and clearly agreed as part of the service.

Do you provide support in every Australian suburb?

Fit Your Ability services multiple locations across Australia, but coverage and team availability vary. Availability must be checked for the participant’s suburb.

Do participants need gym experience?

No. Activities can start at the person’s current level and do not need to take place in a gym.

Does an NDIS plan automatically pay for disability fitness?

No. Whether funding can be used depends on the participant’s individual circumstances, plan, goals, available funding and the applicable NDIS rules.
