Talking Disability Inclusion At The Fitness Industry’s Biggest Conference
Our CEO and founder Scott Hunt will be speaking at the Fitness Industry Expo in Sydney next week. Get your free ticket here and hear him speak on a topic we see every day at Fit Your Ability: disability inclusion in fitness.
Connecting the Fitness and Disability Industries
The desperate need to better connect the fitness industry with the disability industry.
As the only large NDIS registered fitness company in Australia, we sit in a fairly unique position between both worlds.
Within the disability industry, Scott is constantly championing just how important fitness, movement and getting active can be for people living with disability. Not simply exercise for exercise’s sake, but using fitness to help people build strength, confidence, independence, community participation and achieve their individual goals.
Then he gets to stand on stages within the fitness industry and champion the other side of exactly the same issue.
Why Representation in Fitness Matters
Our industry has tens of thousands of incredibly talented personal trainers who could make an enormous difference to people living with disability. Yet disability is still largely missing from mainstream fitness marketing, education and social media.
Too many people living with disability still look at the fitness industry and don’t see themselves represented.
And too many fitness professionals probably don’t realise just how capable they already are of helping, or how much demand exists for what they do.
That gap between the two industries is something Scott wants to help close.
We need the disability industry to recognise fitness professionals as an important part of helping people achieve their goals, while at the same time helping the fitness industry become far more confident, welcoming and genuinely inclusive of people of all abilities.
That’s what Scott will be speaking about next week, sharing some of what we’ve learnt from decades of working with people living with disability and what he believes our wider industry can do better.
27 Years of Independent Business Experience
He’ll also be joining the Independent Operators panel.
Despite our growth, we’re still an independently owned Australian business. Scott started Fitness Enhancement with $400 as a teenager 27 years ago, with no investors or outside ownership, and that remains the case today. So he still knows the opportunities and headaches of running an independent business, albeit now on a much bigger scale.
Still Learning, Still Improving
For Scott, conferences like this aren’t just about speaking either.
Long before he was invited onto the stage, he was attending industry events to learn from other people. He still does exactly that today.
Continuing to learn from both the fitness and disability industries is a big part of how we keep improving what Fit Your Ability can offer participants, families and the people who support them.
