Active Support and Disability Fitness on the Gold Coast

Active Support and Disability Fitness on the Gold Coast

Finding the right support should be about more than completing a list of daily tasks. It should help you participate in activities you enjoy, work towards meaningful goals and feel more confident in everyday life.

Fit Your Ability provides active support and disability fitness on the Gold Coast, combining practical support with movement, recreation and community participation.

Our Personal Trainers and Disability Support Workers support people of different ages, abilities, fitness levels and support needs. Sessions are personalised around what matters to the individual, whether that means becoming more active, developing everyday skills or simply getting out into the community more often.

What Is Active Support?

Active support is a person-centred approach that encourages people with disability to participate in everyday activities rather than having everything done for them. The aim is not to pressure someone into doing more than they are comfortable with. It is to provide the right level of encouragement and assistance so they can be involved in ways that suit their abilities, preferences and goals.

The activity will look different for each person. It could include:

  • Going for a walk along the Gold Coast
  • Visiting a park, pool or recreation facility
  • Practising shopping and other everyday skills
  • Attending a community or sporting activity
  • Preparing a simple meal
  • Working on coordination, balance or mobility
  • Building confidence in new environments
  • Exercising at home, outdoors or in a private training space

Disability Fitness That Is Adapted to the Individual

There is no single exercise program that is right for every person with disability. Our inclusive personal training on the Gold Coast can be adapted to the participant’s starting point, preferences and goals.

Some people enjoy boxing, strength exercises or energetic games. Others may prefer walking, seated exercises, gentle mobility work or activities that feel less like a traditional workout.

A personalised disability fitness session may focus on:

  • General strength and fitness
  • Balance and coordination
  • Mobility and movement confidence
  • Participation in sport or recreation
  • Developing a positive relationship with exercise
  • Building confidence in a private or supportive environment
  • Establishing a more active weekly routine

Exercises can be adjusted according to the participant’s starting point, communication preferences, sensory needs, interests and goals.

The focus is not on comparing one person with another. It is about making movement feel safe, achievable and enjoyable.

Support at Home and in the Gold Coast Community

A busy commercial gym is not the right environment for everyone. That is why Fit Your Ability offers flexible support options that may take place at home, outdoors or in the community.

Depending on availability and the participant’s needs, support may include activities at local parks, walking paths, shopping centres, recreation facilities and other community locations across the Gold Coast.

Fit Your Ability also has a private disability gym in Nerang and Miami for people who may feel more comfortable exercising away from a crowded gym environment.

This flexibility can be particularly helpful for people who:

  • Find large gyms overwhelming
  • Prefer one-on-one assistance
  • Need exercises adapted to their abilities
  • Want to become more confident in community environments
  • Have difficulty travelling independently
  • Want their support and physical activity to work together

What Can an Active Support Session Include?

An active support session is planned around the individual rather than a fixed program.

For one person, it might involve going for a walk, buying groceries and preparing lunch. For someone else, it may involve practising a sport, attending a local activity or completing a personalised exercise session.

Examples include:

Personalised exercise

Participating in strength, balance, mobility or fitness activities that are adapted to the person.

Community participation

Attending a class, sporting activity, recreation facility, social outing or community event.

Everyday skill development

Practising activities such as shopping, meal preparation, planning an outing or safely navigating the community.

Active recreation

Trying activities such as walking, swimming, ball games, cycling or other movement-based hobbies where appropriate.

Building routine and confidence

Creating a regular activity routine with support from someone who understands the person’s needs and goals.

Who Can Benefit from Active Support?

Active support may be suitable for children, teenagers and adults with a wide range of disabilities and support requirements.

A person may benefit when they want to:

  • Become more physically active
  • Try a new sport or recreation activity
  • Build confidence outside the home
  • Participate more in their community
  • Develop everyday skills
  • Improve their consistency with movement
  • Work towards goals relating to fitness, independence or participation

For some, a diagnosis alone does not determine the right support. Fit Your Ability takes the time to understand the individual, including what they enjoy, what they find challenging and what they want to achieve.

Can Active Support or Disability Fitness Be Funded Through an NDIS Plan?

Fit Your Ability is a NDIS registered provider for relevant Core and Capacity Building supports.

However, being an NDIS participant does not automatically mean that every exercise, recreation or support service can be paid for using NDIS funding.

Whether a service can be purchased using a participant’s funding depends on factors including:

  • The supports included in the participant’s plan
  • The person’s disability-related support needs
  • How the activity relates to their goals
  • The available budget
  • The relevant support category
  • How the participant’s plan is managed

Participants, nominees and support coordinators should check the participant’s current plan or speak with the NDIA or plan manager when they are uncertain.

Participants with NDIA-managed funding must use registered providers for supports purchased from that funding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between active support and personal training?

Personal training primarily focuses on structured exercise and fitness goals. Active support may include exercise, but it can also involve community participation, recreation and everyday activities.

Depending on the person’s needs, a session may combine elements of both.

Do I need to be fit before starting?

No. Sessions can begin at the person’s current level and be adapted as their confidence and ability develop.

Can sessions happen at home?

Home-based support may be available depending on the participant’s location, needs and local team availability.

Do you only support NDIS participants?

No. People can enquire about Fit Your Ability services whether or not they are NDIS participants. Payment arrangements and service availability should be confirmed before commencing.

Is every session an exercise session?

No. Active support can include community, recreation and everyday activities as well as structured fitness.
