Building Inclusive Fitness Communities at the Disability Expo
At the heart of the 2024 Disability Expo in Brisbane, Fit you Ability team shared their vision for making exercise accessible to everyone. PT Dan firmly believes that “exercise should be available to all members of our community, not just the fit and abled that are able to get into a gym”. This approach means meeting participants where they are and finding activities that suit every individual, no matter their ability.
For PT Dan, building inclusive communities starts with getting people moving, highlighting research from the Black Dog Institute that points to the positive mental health benefits of exercise as an alternative to medication for depression and anxiety. He emphasizes that “it doesn’t matter what the ability is, there’s something we can do for everybody”.
This inclusive approach was on full display at the expo, with attendees excitedly joining workouts, exploring new possibilities, and discovering services tailored to their unique needs. As PT Dan encouraged, “Come on, let’s get out here and do some as well”, proving that, with the right support and mindset, fitness truly belongs to everyone.
Inclusive fitness at Disability Expo isn’t about building muscle or following trends it’s about building a supportive community where every individual has the opportunity to move, connect, and thrive.
