Fit Your Ability named Australia’s Most Inclusive and/or Diverse Program at the national fitness industry awards
Disability fitness business Fit Your Ability has won Most Inclusive and/or Diverse Program at the 2026 AUSactive Awards, becoming the first disability-focused organisation to win the category.
The award recognises inclusion and diversity across a broad range of fitness, health, wellbeing and community programs, rather than being a disability-specific category. Fit Your Ability has been a finalist several times in previous years and has typically been the only finalist focused specifically on disability.
Fit Your Ability founder Scott Hunt said the award represents how far disability inclusion within the fitness industry has come, while highlighting how much more still needs to change.
“When I started 27 years ago, disability fitness wasn’t even a consideration for our industry. Even ten years ago, it wasn’t really an industry and it certainly wasn’t a term people commonly used,” Hunt said.
“Aside from a handful of small businesses and personal trainers, including myself, there was very little consideration about how people living with disability could exercise in a gym, group class or with a personal trainer.”
“We’re proud to have played a major part in changing that conversation nationally and helping create what is now becoming a genuine disability fitness sector.”
“The industry today is incredibly diverse when it comes to getting fit people fitter. Unfortunately, this is often what scares many people away from it. It’s one of the reasons we still have a long way to go when it comes to helping many of the most vulnerable Australians who need our industry the most.”
“Disability sport has done a fantastic job, with the likes of the Paralympics and Special Olympics showing what people living with disability can achieve. But the broader fitness industry has lagged behind.”
“For many, there is still an assumption that someone living with disability either can’t exercise, shouldn’t exercise, or won’t benefit from exercise in the same ways and the same places everyone else does.”
“For many people living with disability, they don’t need special facilities for ‘special needs’. They need personal trainers, gyms and gym members to be more inclusive. They are out there, but that message is often lost behind the louder culture of aesthetics, gym selfies and high performance.
Hunt regularly speaks at both disability and fitness industry events and is often published, advocating for stronger links between the two sectors.
“We spend a lot of time telling the disability sector how important fitness is, while at the same time telling the fitness industry how important it is to become more accessible to people living with disability.”
“Disability does not mean inability. We should be asking how someone can exercise, not assuming they can’t.”
“To now win this award is incredibly meaningful because inclusion and diversity is such a broad category. It also reflects AUSactive’s commitment as our industry body to making fitness more inclusive.”
“We are talking about 4.3 million Australians living with disability. This isn’t a small niche.”
“Inclusivity needs to be more than a word used by the fitness industry. It needs to mean genuine access and genuine opportunity for people who have historically been left out.”
About Fit Your Ability
Fit Your Ability is Australia’s only national disability fitness business, operating across 12 cities with hundreds of personal trainers and support workers.
The program grew from Fitness Enhancement Personal Training, founded in Nerang on the Gold Coast by Scott Hunt in 1999 at age 19 with a focus on helping people who felt they didn’t have the ability to attend a traditional gym.
Fitness Enhancement began expanding nationally in 2013 and became NDIS registered in 2019, helping evolve into the Fit Your Ability program operating around Australia today.
Fit Your Ability combines personal training and active disability support to help people living with disability become more active and work towards individual health, independence and participation goals.
The original family-owned business now supports other family-owned businesses around Australia to deliver the program within their local communities.
The 2026 AUSactive Fitness Industry Awards were held at the iconic Sydney Town Hall on 11 September 2026, bringing together leading individuals, businesses and programs from across Australia’s health, fitness and wellness industries.
