How the Fitness Industry Can Be More Inclusive to All Abilities

How the Fitness Industry Can Be More Inclusive to People with Disabilities

The fitness industry has long been associated with stereotypes of hardcore training and bodybuilding, but it’s much more than that. Many people with disabilities feel that gyms and fitness spaces aren’t for them, which is a major barrier to participation. In reality, 17% of Australians have a disability, almost as many as those who regularly go to the gym.

While the introduction of the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) has provided new opportunities for people with disabilities to access support, there are still significant challenges. Only about 14% of people with disabilities are actually on the NDIS, so it’s important for the fitness industry to think beyond just NDIS registration.

Being inclusive isn’t just about adding a notice to your website; it requires real commitment to awareness and accessibility. Many people don’t realize that the industry already serves clients of all abilities, but more stories and representation are needed. Fitness providers can do more by sharing success stories, focusing on inclusion, and offering support that aligns with individual goals around independence, mobility, and community.

Ultimately, the industry should aim to make everyone regardless of their ability, feel welcome and supported in their fitness journey. With growing awareness and the right resources, Australian fitness can be truly inclusive for all.
