Mick’s 100km Journey as a Vision-Impaired Athlete
Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Others Through Inclusive Fitness
At Fit Your Ability, we’re passionate about making fitness accessible to everyone—no matter their ability. One of the most inspiring stories we’ve had the honour of being part of is Mick’s journey to complete a 100km marathon. As someone with vision impairment, Mick faced more than the usual physical demands of long-distance running—he also had to navigate every step without full sight. But thanks to the power of teamwork, trust, and the right support, Mick didn’t take on this challenge alone.
Mick, who calls himself “a bike person,” decided to step far outside his comfort zone by committing to running. It wasn’t just a personal challenge—it became a shared mission between him and his trainer, Kelly. Kelly served as Mick’s running guide, keeping him safe and on track through constant communication and attentiveness. From warning him about uneven surfaces to syncing their steps on pavement edges, the duo developed a seamless rhythm. For Kelly, it was more than a guiding role—it was a dream come true. “I used to watch the marathon guides on TV and think, wow, what an amazing thing to do. And now I get to be that person. Not just for Mick, but for myself too.”
Their journey highlights the importance of inclusion in fitness. People with vision impairment often face significant barriers when it comes to physical activity, but with personalised training and a supportive guide, those barriers can be broken down. Mick and Kelly’s experience wasn’t just about finishing the kilometres—it was about building a bond rooted in trust, laughter, and shared determination. Together, they turned what seemed impossible into a powerful reality.
Mick’s story is proof that marathons—and life—can be tackled one guided step at a time. It’s a reminder that with the right support, people of all abilities can achieve incredible things. Whether you’re vision impaired, new to exercise, or simply looking for inspiration, Mick and Kelly show us that no challenge is too great when you’ve got someone by your side.
Watch the video below to see how Mick, with the help of his guide Kellie, was able to run in a marathon—proving that with the right support, anything is possible. We hope it inspires others to chase their goals, no matter the barriers.
